Meet the 2020 Percussion Team

Spirit of Atlanta is excited to announce the group of talented educators who will be leading our Percussion ensembles for the 2020 season.

Adam Wiencken

Adam Wiencken joins Spirit of Atlanta as Battery Arranger and Co-Caption Head.   He is the Percussion Specialist for Broken Arrow Public Schools in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. As Director of Percussion and Battery Arranger for the Pride of Broken Arrow Marching Band, the ensemble is a consistent Bands of America (BOA) Regional Champion and Grand National Finalist. Adam was a percussion staff member at The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps from 2013-2016; in 2013, The Cadets were awarded the Drum Corps International (DCI) Fred Sanford Award for High Percussion Performance. He previously served on the instructional staff for the Santa Clara Vanguard, Troopers, Crossmen, and Blue Stars Drum & Bugle Corps. Adam is an alumnus of the Madison Scouts and The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps.  As Director and Founder of Broken Arrow High School Indoor Percussion, the program has received high accolades in its short history, capturing three Winter Guard International (WGI) Regional Championships; in 2017 and 2018, Broken Arrow Indoor was a Scholastic World WGI World Championship Semi-Finalist.



Chris Hodgson

Joining him as Co-Caption head is Chris Hodgson.  He studied percussion at Butler University in Indianapolis, IN where he holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Music Education.  Chris marched  from 2005-2007 with the Seattle Cascades, Capital Regiment, and the Troopers; additionally, he has played with the Star United Drumline, Indianapolis Colts Drumline, and the 2012 Super Bowl Halftime Drumline.  Chris has been teaching percussion in the Indianapolis area for many years.  As an alumnus, he first taught as a Percussion Instructor at Center Grove High School.  He then was the Percussion Director for Greenfield Central High School from 2008-2012, and now is currently in his 8th year as the Percussion Director for Franklin Central High School, a 4-time WGI Scholastic World Class Finalist from 2016 to 2019.




Kevin Welborn

Kevin Welborn joins Spirit of Atlanta as Percussion Consultant.  He is the Associate Director of Athletic Bands and Director of Pep Bands at The University of Alabama.  Mr. Welborn is also the director of the percussion section of the Million Dollar Band, as well as the conductor of the Alabama Concert Band. He holds both a Bachelor and master’s degree in music education from The University of Southern Mississippi.  Kevin is an alumnus of the Carolina Crown and Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps. He was on the percussion staff at The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps from 2016-2018; he also served as the Percussion Caption Head for the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps from 2009-2012.  Kevin was a percussion staff member for the Troopers in 2007 and 2008, as well as Memphis Sound Drum and Bugle corps in 2004 and 2005.




Matt Filosa

Matt Filosa returns to Spirit of Atlanta as the Front Ensemble Arranger/Sounds Designer/Caption Head.  He is a freelance percussionist, composer, and arranger currently residing in Fort Worth, Texas. Owner of Sonus Designs and Publications, Matt writes, designs for, and teaches marching bands and indoor percussion groups all over the country. Matt has done sound design and front ensemble arranging for several WGI and DCI finalist groups, most notably PIW group Music City Mystique (music/sound designer) , the Cadets (Sound Design 2017-2018), and Spirit of Atlanta (2019). Matt earned his Bachelors in Percussion Performance from the University of Florida (2007) and Masters in Percussion Performance from the University of North Texas (2009). While attending UNT, Matt wrote for and taught the Green Brigade Drumline. In 2011, Matt was accepted into the Florida State percussion studios doctoral program, where his responsibilities included teaching the Marching Chiefs Drumline (2011-2015). Currently ABD, Matt plans to earn his Doctorate in Percussion Performance in the fall of 2019.
