The time has finally arrived! Spirit of Atlanta’s first weekend camp is just around the corner, and we can’t wait to see the energy, passion, and talent that our members will bring as we kick off the 2025 season. Whether it’s your first camp or you’re a seasoned Spirit veteran, preparation is key to making the most out of your experience. Here’s everything you need to know to get ready for an unforgettable weekend.
1. Pack Like a Pro
Preparing for a camp weekend starts with smart packing. Here's a checklist to ensure you have everything you need:
Instrument or Equipment: Brass, percussion, guard—don’t forget your gear and any accessories you need (mouthpieces, sticks, tape, flags, etc.).
Comfortable Clothing: Athletic wear, layers for varying temperatures, and proper marching shoes are essential.
Bedding: Bring a sleeping bag, pillow, and anything else you need to stay comfortable overnight. You may bring an air mattress but it may be no larger than a twin size, single height mattress. No cots.
Personal Essentials: Toiletries, towels, medications, shower shoes (like flip flops) and other daily necessities.
Water Bottle: Staying hydrated during rehearsals is essential, even with indoors and in the winter! We recommend bringing a water bottle that holds at least 24 oz, but feel free to go bigger if you prefer. Don’t stress about matching the ones we use during summer—We’ll order matching ones in bulk during the summer to ensure a cohesive look.
Snacks: Pack a few high-energy snacks to keep you fueled between meals.
Notebook and Pencil: You’ll want to jot down notes and feedback during sectionals and full ensemble rehearsals.
Email Check: Be sure to double check your emails for anything asked by your specific section or caption head!
2. Review Your Materials
Before camp, revisit any audition packets, sheet music, or choreography you’ve received. Make sure you’re confident with the basics so you can hit the ground running. If you’ve been given exercises, warm-ups, or music to memorize, spend some time polishing them ahead of the weekend. We rehearse together as an ensemble, but your individual practice and preparation beforehand is essential. Our weekend camps move quickly, so it’s important that you’ve been preparing on your own to fully contribute during rehearsals.
3. Get in the Right Mindset
A positive attitude and open mind go a long way at camp. Be ready to absorb feedback, connect with your peers, and embrace the Spirit of Atlanta culture. Remember, every rehearsal is an opportunity to grow as a performer and a teammate.
4. Prioritize Your Health
Drum corps demands a lot physically and mentally, so take care of yourself leading up to camp. Get plenty of rest, eat balanced meals, hydrate, and stretch to keep your body in top form. If you’re not used to long rehearsals, start building your stamina now by practicing or exercising for extended periods.
5. Know the Schedule
Arrive promptly and come prepared! Review the camp itinerary in advance to familiarize yourself with start times, meal breaks, and lights out. Staying organized will help you stay focused and make the most of your time.
We’ll be reaching out to confirm travel arrangements for all members prior to camp, so be sure to regularly check your email for important updates and details as camp approaches.
Since this is a full weekend camp, our food truck will be available on-site.
Please note that food delivery from third-party services or leaving campus for meals will not be allowed.
6. Build Connections
One of the best parts of camp is the chance to meet other performers who share your passion. Take time to connect with your section, chat with staff, and build friendships. The bonds you form at Spirit will last far beyond this season.
7. Ask Questions
If you’re unsure about anything—whether it’s music, marching, or logistics—don’t hesitate to ask. Staff and returning members are there to help and guide you. It’s better to ask early than to feel lost later.
8. Bring Your Passion
At the end of the day, Spirit of Atlanta is all about heart, determination, and legacy. Bring your passion and commitment to every rehearsal and show us why you’re here. We’re building something amazing together, and every member plays a vital role in that journey.
We’re so excited to see you all this weekend and kick off an incredible season. Prepare, stay focused, and get ready to bring the Spirit! See you at camp! 💙
